Shopify accepts product images up to 20 MB and 5000 × 5000 pixels, and recommends square photos at 2048 × 2048 for a clean product grid. Those are the maximums — the number that matters more for real stores is how heavy each image is when a shopper opens the page.
The tool is preset to 500 KB, a practical target for square product photos that keeps pages snappy without visible quality loss on typical product shots. Adjust the number if your theme uses very large hero product images.
